Exercise for people with a cancer diagnosis is very timely topic with increasing interest from the community as well as the broader medical field.
In their position statement on Exercise in Cancer Care, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) recommends exercise to be integrated into cancer care. Siobhan O’Toole is a breast cancer survivor who, through her own cancer experience, became an advocate for integrating a rehab protocol, including exercise prescription, into the treatment plan of every cancer patient. Siobhan raised over $120, 000 and went on to win the 2019 Westfield Local Hero Award. She continues to facilitate events to raise awareness of the importance of exercise during and after cancer treatment. Siobhan is currently collaborating with St Vincent’s Hospital to set up a cancer pre-and rehab program that works on patient well-being. It is aimed to be an Australian first program designed to be scalable and accessible through private and public health. Her goal is to have exercise become part of the prescribed treatment. During this session Siobhan will explain more about her advocacy and talk about her involvement with the published book ‘The Exercise Prescription’. You can learn more about Siobhan’s story here and support the course here.
