About Friday Social

This initiative provides an opportunity for anyone affected by cancer to connect and have fun through a variety of free guided activities and workshops. Open to all cancer patients past and present including their family and carers. Based in Sydney, it will take place once a month and there is no commitment to attend every session. Under the current Covid-19 restrictions we are hosting these events online until it is safe to meet in person. For more information please contact sydneyfridaysocial@gmail.com

Our Friday Social initiative has been a great success so far. The next session is:

Enjoy the experience of cooking and learning from the comfort of your own kitchen! Jane Freeman is an internationally regarded, highly experienced cancer dietitian and nutritionist. She is also a Leith’s trained cook, an IOC (International Olympic Committee) qualified sports nutritionist and award-winning cancer book author. She has worked out of leading hospitals and cancer clinics in Australia, London and Singapore, as well as consulted on the World Cancer Research Fund UK, Singapore Cancer Society and the Australian Cancer Council.

During the session Jane will take us through some simple recipes and help us to understand the nutritional demands of cancer. She will share her expertise on how to manage common food and diet related side effects and we’ll hear her answer some practical questions about how to eat well during and after cancer treatment.

This will be an engaging, interactive session and you will have the option to cook with us or simply watch and learn. There will also be opportunities to ask questions and share some of your own experiences with food and diet changes during cancer treatment. So get ready to learn about why good nutrition is important and how food can be healthy, enticing, easy to prepare and delicious!

It’s time for some fun with a Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow dance fitness party! Created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez, Zumba is one of the largest branded fitness programs in the world. Based on the core dance rhythms of Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Reggaeton it’s sure to get your heart pumping as you shake away your cares and lose yourself in the music!

Our licensed instructor is Nikki Tuckwell, an experienced dancer who will take us through some basic Zumba moves. No experience is required and the intensity level will be kept at a moderate pace to cater for a wide variety of fitness levels. There will also be time set aside for participants to get to know each other and this will be facilitated by the team at Friday Social.

Research shows that exercise has many benefits for people who have been affected by cancer and can help to manage some common side effects of treatment. So jump around, move in any way that you can and shake what your Mama gave you as we dance our way into the weekend!

At Oncology Recovery Services Inc. we are passionate about connecting our community.  Inspired by and in collaboration with one of our young breast cancer patients we created this new and exciting initiative.

Join us for our first Friday Social where we hear from Professor Felicia Huppert, a psychologist with a long-standing research interest in the science of well-being and the promotion of human flourishing.

The talk will explore research around well-being and post-traumatic growth. Felicia will also speak openly about the experiences and challenges faced during her own cancer treatment. This will be an engaging discussion and there will be an opportunity for questions.
